How It Works
1What We're Looking For
1. Motivated Students Who Want to Help Others.
2. Patient, Caring, and Creative.
3. See 1 and 2.
2What You Need
1. A decent internet connection.
2. A Google email address that isn't a school email (they don't work).
3. A tablet or computer with a working webcam and microphone.
4. A writing pad or a stylus to be able to write on screen. If you don't have one, and can't afford one, we'll provide it.
3How Do I Become a Tutor?
Fill out the form below. We'll be in touch with you soon for an interview. If you're under 18, your parents will have to sign a release. If you're over 18, you'll have to sign one.
You'll have to answer questions about your disciplinary history and provide references. Less than a perfect record is OK. We just want to make sure it's a safe and fun environment for all students.
4How Will Tutoring Work?
This is an evolving program, so we'll see how it goes. At present, we'll encourage tutors to form a relationship with students, so students will generally get to see the same tutor week after week. Tutors will also be required to send notes after every session for our records and in case students need to see another tutor.
Sessions will range from half an hour to an hour, depending on the age. Frequency will be determined by need.
5How Many Hours a Week?
I don't usually set minimums for my employees and that seems to work well. Basically, you'll be able to volunteer when you want and for as many hours as you want, although we'll start slow.
6Volunteer Hours, Letters, and Sundry
Your hours will be tracked and I'll be happy to sign off of them for NHS or for whomever needs to see them. In the past, students who have worked for me (for pay) have asked for and gotten letters of recommendation for scholarships and college. I wouldn't recommend using me (there's probably better folks to choose in your life), but I am happy to do that for volunteers who are really involved.
Aside from tutoring, there may be other opportunities to get involved.
7Volunteer Partners
I always treat people I work as collaborators and will do the same here. I'm always open to ideas, suggestions, and criticisms.
